Sustainability & Community

v7.jpg

For us, sustainability is about kaitiakitanga: caring for people,
communities and the environment, and making responsible choices
that create lasting value for Aotearoa.

Thoughtful construction
for a better Aotearoa

Our commitment to our communities, our industry and the planet means cost alone doesn’t drive our procurement decisions. It’s a long-term focus that has shaped how we work from the start.

Home Construction Limited is a Certified B Corporation™. This means we meet verified standards for social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability set by B Lab. We’re part of a global movement working to benefit people and planet.

This independent certification shows our commitment to sustainability and community goes beyond statements and promises. It’s embedded in how we work.

B Corp certification assesses the entire company across five areas: governance, workers, community, environment and customers. After a two-and-a-half-year independent audit, we scored 148.9 against the 80-point threshold to certify. The median score for businesses that complete the assessment is 50.9.

Our approach to sustainability covers three things: the footprint of how we build, the performance of the homes we hand over, and the communities we build in. Our ownership and governance underpin all of it.

Carbon & waste

Construction generates around half of all waste sent to landfill in Aotearoa New Zealand. Reducing our share of that has been a long-standing focus for Home Construction.

What this looks like on-site

  • On-site waste sorting and diversion tracking, including on the developments where we are both developer and contractor. At Te Pākau Maru we set a target for kilograms of waste per square metre and worked to come in under it.

  • Under the B Corp assessment framework, our Scope 1 and 2 carbon intensity sits in the lowest available bracket for a business of our size and revenue.

  • Our building performance, waste and emissions are measured through digital monitoring tool, Tether.

  • We use the frameworks set out by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to help us set realistic yet meaningful emissions reduction targets.

Homes that perform

Poor quality housing is one of the most significant and best-evidenced drivers of poor health outcomes in Aotearoa, particularly for children. That’s why Home Construction is committed to building Homestar 6 or better, whenever we have the design agency to do so.

As a main contractor, how much we can shape a building's environmental performance depends on when we join the project. On a build-only contract, we deliver the design in front of us as efficiently and as cleanly as we can.

Under our Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and Design & Build services, we help shape the project and consider environmental performance from the outset. We consider building form, orientation, shading, ventilation and facade performance to reduce energy demand.

Where the brief allows, we can also propose solar, centralised hot water and space heating, energy storage and smart home technologies.

If the budget needs to tighten, we work hard to protect the project’s long-term value and sustainability, prioritising thermal comfort, indoor air quality and access to daylight.

The Residences at Karamū

The Residences at Karamū

A mixed-tenure development where sustainability and community stability go hand in hand.

Twenty-eight homes where the carbon work was done in the right order. Emissions were reduced at source first, through design, material selection and construction method, and only the residual 501 tonnes of CO₂e was offset, through verified credits and native planting in Canterbury. Offsetting is the last step in that sequence, not a substitute for the steps before it.

Designing & building
for the long term

Ensuring a building project is sustainable, high-quality, long-lasting and completed within an acceptable budget requires innovative thinking and approaches.

We apply whole-of-life thinking, factoring in maintenance, embodied and operational carbon, and how a building performs over the decades it will be lived in.

Materials are selected for durability, occupant wellbeing and whole-of-life value.

What this looks like on-site

  • More than 70% of the projects we completed in the FY25 were Homestar rated.

  • Homestar 6 and 7 homes are expected to use around 23–34% less electricity than a code-minimum home, saving residents roughly $540 to $800 a year (Source: NZGBC, May 2025).

  • At Arbor Green in Rolleston, 10 high-performance homes are targeting up to 50% better than the building code.

  • Prioritising local suppliers, which cuts transport emissions and strengthens regional economies.

  • Working with suppliers we know and audit. More than 75% of our significant suppliers are subject to regular quality audits.

  • Aligning with NZGBC frameworks, including Homestar ratings wherever the project allows.

“How we do the work matters just as much as the home we hand over. That means how we treat our people, our build partners, the environment, and the community – everything construction touches along the way.”

Purpose-led
ownership

Where a company’s profits go says as much about it as what it builds. Home Construction is wholly owned by Home Foundation, a charitable trust. Alongside Home Capital Partners, Kāinga Maha and Te Wawata Kāinga, we are part of Home Foundation Group, united by a shared vision: a just housing system where quality homes enable flourishing communities.

That ownership determines where our profits go. We’ve donated millions to charitable causes and our team has contributed thousands of volunteer hours.

Strong governance is what holds this together. We amended our constitution to commit, legally, to weighing all our stakeholders in our decision-making rather than shareholder return alone.

Organisations
we’ve supported

Hoops in Schools

Alongside the Canterbury Regional Basketball Foundation, we have installed basketball hoops in 18 Canterbury schools, creating long-term participation opportunities for tamariki and rangatahi.

Habitat for Humanity's Brush with Kindness

We support Habitat's community-based property maintenance and repair programme, which helps low-income homeowners keep their homes safe, secure and well maintained. Our teams have taken on decking, cladding, roofing, bathroom and asbestos removal work across Canterbury.

Cholmondeley Children's Centre

From basketball hoop installation to the retaining wall and earthworks for a new flying fox, Home Construction has a long-standing association with Cholmondeley, and we will keep supporting them.

New Brighton food bank

We extended and weatherproofed the food bank structure at the New Brighton Anglican church, and carried out repairs to the church hall.

One Mother to Another

We donated 8,600 earplugs to be included in care packages for parents and caregivers going through some of life's hardest moments. The charity's packages have supported more than 7,000 families.

Habitat builds in Nepal and Fiji

Our team joins Home Foundation's twice-yearly overseas Habitat for Humanity builds.

Understand Home Construction’s sustainability approach

Te Pākau Maru

Te Pākau Maru

Homestar 7 homes designed for healthier, lower-carbon living.

Te Pākau Maru shows what sustainability looks like when it is built in from the start. In New Brighton, Home Construction delivered 63 mixed-tenure homes, every one certified Homestar 7, which means warmer, healthier homes that cost less to run.

Each home has heat recovery ventilation and EV charging capability, durable low-impact materials, and structures engineered for future climate conditions. Homes are expected to use around 34% less electricity, saving residents roughly $800 a year.
